Cousins {Lethbridge, Alberta Portrait Photographer}
Posted on May 11, 2012
We had big plans. Plans that involved rain and rain boots. But every time we would plan for a day the rain wouldn’t come. And every day that definitely didn’t work for one of us, the rain would come. Hard. Unfortunately one of these pretty ladies lives in Ontario and had to return there the other day.. meaning our rain shoot will just have to happen next time she comes. On the bright side, we did manage to get some pictures of the two of them together!
Charmaine and Aletta: Thank you so much for being up for my crazy idea.. even though we didn’t get to actually do it! Next time

The Frailty of Life
Posted on April 20, 2012
The past few weeks have been busy ones for me. Busy and life changing. The events that have happened have made me realize how fragile life is. We really do not know when our life may end.. Or when we may last see our loved ones. Dan’s Opa passed away, and although I didn’t know him too well, I witnessed a large family pull together in a time of sadness. Then a couple from our church circles went missing. And although I didn’t know them very well either, I couldn’t help but go out and help search. I witnessed a huge community of churches pull together to help bring this couple home, and when they were finally re-united with their children, I witnessed this same community come together to worship and praise a merciful and majestic God.
These two events have impacted my life in more ways than I can express. I hug my family tighter and kiss them often because I have no way of knowing if that hug or kiss is going to be the last. I’ve started trying harder to keep our home clean, and to cook Dan supper every night, because I know these things make him happy and I want happy memories of eachother. I spend more time tickling Joelle because it makes her laugh, and I love hearing her laugh. I spend more time cuddling with Malachi because I love the feel of him in my arms and I never know if he’ll be here tomorrow.
These things have also made me realize another thing. How important it is to document the day-to-day occasions of family life. To capture Malachi’s giggles and grins. To capture the rubber boots placed on the wrong feet. To freeze the moments and memories in our lives that make our life what it is. It’s important. If anything were to happen tomorrow or in a week.. or even years down the road, I’ll want those pictures to look back on and find healing in.
And so I challenge you: pick up your camera and document all the small moments of your life that make life what it is. Take a picture of your Opa or Oma sitting in the chair they always sit in. Take a picture of your husband with that baseball cap he always wears, even if you really don’t like that hat. Get a picture of your parents together. Have a picture taken of you with your bestfriend, or sisters, or brothers, or even the entire family. Do it now, while you still can, because you never know when it’s going to be your last chance!

Joelle: Twenty-Two Months
Posted on April 13, 2012
Our little girl is almost two. TWO! It’s gone so fast and I can’t believe how big she is already. She’s developing more and more each day into such a little character. A girly character that I can’t help but love to bits! I want to stop her growth and make her stay this way forever, but I know that’s obviously not possible.
Joelle talks so much, and I know that once I’m able to understand everything she says there will never be a moment of rest. Some of the words she says includes, “hi, bye-bye, cya, Buppa (Opa), thank-you, shoes, boots, woof-woof (dog), moo (cow), soo (soother), juice, socks, yuck, ’side (outside), mommy, dad, sleep, book, see (when she wants to see something), and bless-you (when someone sneezes).” Sometimes it sounds like she strings words together, like the other day when she scared Malachi and he started to cry. She leaned in real close to him and it really sounded like she said, “Sorry! I didn’t mean to.”
Joelle is such a little girl. She walks everywhere with her doll in one arm, a bag of sorts over the other arm, and a pair of my shoes on her feet. She then looks at me with a big grin and waves, “Cya!”
Yesterday Joelle was reading the Elves and the Shoemaker, and came up to me with the book, pointed at the picture of the old shoemaker and said, “Buppa!!!” (Opa) Oh what a character she is!
I could go on and on about our little princess, but unfortunately I can hear that she’s in the chip cupboard, having a feast of chips for breakfast

More Than a Piece of Paper
Posted on April 4, 2012
I’ve spent a lot of time over the past few days thinking about my Mom’s Dad- my Opa. He’s been gone quite a while now, but every once in a while I miss him tremendously. The past few days have been rather tough and I can’t help but constantly think back to the picture sitting on my parent’s wall unit. It’s a picture of my Opa, sitting down and resting on his cane, with a content smile on his face. It was taken at my cousin’s wedding and was one of the last pictures we got of him before he passed away. I love that picture. Every time I see that picture I can’t help but remember the countless coffee visits my Oma and him made to our home. I can’t help but remember him making us french toast for breakfast when my parent’s would leave them to babysit. I can’t help but remember the countless visits to the hospital to see him… I loved going with my mom to visit him there, usually because my uncle’s would also be there and the four of them would spend hours cracking jokes and telling funny stories.
Even though he’s been gone for quite a while, I get all those memories back every time I see that black and white, 4×6 photograph of him sitting on the wall unit.
This story has a point.
I took a poll on my facebook business page the other day asking what my client’s wanted to walk away with after their session. Did they want a disc of all the digital files? Did they want prints? Did they maybe want an album with all the images showcased inside? Or perhaps did they want a combination of all those things? The result was that most people only wanted the disc of digital files.
We live in a time of technology. Things are constantly changing- constantly improving. I’ve lived to see the floppy disc evolve into a USB and then a DVD, the cassette tapes evolve in to CD’s, and DVD’s are now starting to change into BluRay’s. And I’m only twenty! What is technology going to be like in the next 10 years? The next 20?
A simple photograph of my Opa takes me back to when I was a kid. It takes me back through countless memories. I’d like to think that when you book a portrait session, you’re making an investment. An investment into memories that will last not only your own life time, but the life time of generations after you.
If you’re only walking away with a disc of digital images, what happens 10 or 20 years down the road when that disc is no longer compatible with the technology of that time? The generations after you won’t be able to re-visit those memories through a photograph of you. They won’t be able to see who their Aunt or Uncle was, who their grandparent’s were, or perhaps even who their great-grandparents were.
So what’s important to you? Walking away with a disc of images that will sit on a bookshelf or hide in a box? Or is it having a photograph to proudly display in your home? A photograph that will trigger memories and that will potentially be passed down from generation to generation?
